Do you know the difference between a llama and an alpaca? Before the experience, I didn't.
Llamas are a native animal to South America and come from the camelid family. They make great hiking companions as they can travel long distances with ease, and are often used to carry heavy loads. There are only a handful of places in Australia that have llamas treks. In the state of Victoria, this is the only one!
Meet your knowledgeable guide, Mark, from Hanging Rock Llama Treks. Mark has been taking visitors on these unique experiences with his llamas for years; wandering through the peaceful bushland of Hanging Rock Nature Reserve in the Macedon Ranges.
As I found, the llamas had incredibly friendly and funny characters. Each person was randomly paired with a llama for the walk. Pictured here is Sinoba, the baby of the group, who was only 18 months old at the time but almost as tall as me! He loved pats, stopping to eat grass, and munching on llama biscuits which were given as a treat at the end of the hike.
The walks are priced at $65 for a 3 hour session (5km walk) with afternoon tea included. There are a few different experiences available including a longer hiking experience or a short meet & greet session with the llamas if you are not keen on walking. Bookings are required in advance so contact Mark or Amanda to check availability: hangingrockllamas@bigpond.com or phone 0408285667.
